The loft's new “super-sized” sewing machine has an underarm clearance of 900mm x 350mm. This means that our other big machine, an Adler 366 longarm (the standard”big” machine in most big lofts worldwide) fits almost completely under the arm. The manufacturer claims to have sewn through 20mm ply wood during testing, although we did not dare to repeat this…. Fact is, that this machine is extremely powerful and a pleasure to work with. |

Look for the bright red building next to FKG Rigging. We are on the top floor. There is a dinghy dock, car park and electric hoist to make transporting your sails easy. The loft boasts a raised floor of 2300 sq ft, allowing room to work on the largest sails, 2 'big' machines, spinnaker machine plus 4 work stations for canvas building and repair – and room to grow. For the at-home sewers, we stock all of the most popular fabrics in the most popular colours – 700 yds of Sunbrella alone! Together with other supplies from adhesives to zippers, we are your one-stop shop for all your canvas and sail sewing needs.

Ernst Looser is the
founder and manager of Tropical Sail Loft. He completed his
apprenticeship training in Germany in 1989 and is a fully qualified
and experienced Sail Maker. He worked in several lofts before starting
Tropical Sail Loft. Ernst is also an experienced sailor, both in
racing and ocean passage making.
Tropical Sail Loft first opened it's doors 1996, in Philipsburg, as a one-man business in a tiny (14' x 18') Loft. Within a year moving to bigger premises opposite Bobby's Marina, and again in 1999 to the Budget Marine Building,Cole Bay until November 2005. But again, as the sails (and the business) grew bigger and bigger, we found themselves needing more space! In December 2005, Tropical Sail Loft moved to it's current 3200 sq. ft. premises at Lagoon Marina – on the water’s edge of Simpson Bay Lagoon.
